Medical Providers

You Play an Important Role in ending Childhood Lead Poisoning!

New York State Law and Regulations:

  • Children at ages 1 and 2 are required to have blood lead testing

  • Children ages 6 months to 6 years are required to be screened for risk of lead exposure. Any child found to be at risk must have a blood lead test

  • If a child has an elevated blood lead test, the health care provider must follow the rules and regulations for appropriate follow-up testing and medical management.

  • Guidance must be provided on lead poisoning prevention and risk reduction to families.

  • Anticipatory lead exposure prevention guidance must be provided to all parents of children under 6 years old, as a part of routine care.

Visit the NYSDOH Lead Webpage for medical providers to obtain more information on Lead Poisoning Prevention guidance. This page also has additional resources to be given to patients and families.
